چکیده

We describe a new approach to default reason ing based on a principle of indi erence among possible worlds We interpret default rules as extreme statistical statements thus obtaining a knowledge base KB comprised of statistical and rst order statements We then assign equal probability to all worlds consistent with KB in order to assign a degree of belief to a statement The degree of belief can be used to decide whether to defeasibly conclude Various nat ural patterns of reasoning such as a preference for more speci c defaults indi erence to irrele vant information and the ability to combine in dependent pieces of evidence turn out to follow naturally from this technique Furthermore our approach is not restricted to default reason ing it supports a spectrum of reasoning from quantitative to qualitative It is also related to other systems for default reasoning In par ticular we show that the work of Goldszmidt et al which applies maximum entropy ideas to semantics can be embedded in our framework

Default Logic and purity of reasoning

Foreword Ray Reiter has worked out Default Logic during his sabbatical leave in 1979, at Imperial College in London. The paper on Default Logic then appeared in the landmark issue of the Artificial Intelligence Journal on " Commonsense Reasoning " [1]. A vast literature flourished from Ray's initial proposal, and after 20 years, it is still studied and used in many fields of Artificial Intellig...

On the Relation between the Coherence and Foundations Theories of Belief Revision

Two recent papers, (GG ardenfors 1990; Doyle 1992), try to assess the relative merits of the two main approaches to belief revision, the foundations and coherence theories, but leave open the question of the mathematical connections between them. We answer this question by showing that the foundations and coherence theories of belief revision are mathematically equivalent. The result also has c...

Non Monotonic Reasoning and Belief

The major approaches to belief revision and non monotonic reasoning proposed in the literature diier along a number of dimensions, including whether they are \syntax-based" or \semantic-based", \foundational" or \coherentist", \consistence{restoring" or \inconsistency{tolerant". Our contribution towards clarifying the connections between these various approaches is threefold: We show that the t...

AI – 1994 – 10 Nonmonotonic Consequence in Default Model Theory

Default model theory is a nonmonotonic formalism for representing and reasoning about commonsense knowledge. Although this theory is motivated by ideas in Reiter’s work on default logic, it is a very different, in some sense dual framework. We make Reiter’s default extension operator into a constructive method of building models, not theories. Domain theory, which is a well established tool for...

Using OWL Design Patterns for Modeling and Reasoning with Organizational Policies

Organizations use policies to manage business cases effectively and efficiently. However, when they start defining their policies, they are often incomplete. In order to enact the incomplete set of policies they define a default policy that is used for cases that do not match the initial policy set. Since matching a business case to a set of policies is a classification problem, we suggest that...
